Draft Day 2 Comments
Oregon State football players are starting go off the board. Read the full breakdown in Monday’s GT here. Check out the Andy Levitre story that ran in Sunday’s GT here.
CB Keenan Lewis was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round with then 96th pick. I caught up with him right after and he was really moved. I’ve said this before, but Lewis was a really nice guy. He and I got along really well, and wished him well.
Lewis is also happy that one of his childhood friends, wide receiver Mike Wallace, was drafted by the Steelers in the third round. Wallace nearly attended OSU with Lewis, but went to Mississippi instead.
LB/DE Victor Butler was picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth with the 110th pick. Then Slade Norris was the big-time surprise pick in the fourth with 126th by the Oakland Raiders. Everyone thought he would be a free agent. The NFL Web site doens’t even have a bio ready for him.
I just reached Norris, and he was stunned. He had no idea he would go that high. He hoped to be a sixth-seventh rounder. This story is getting a lot of hits today because of Raiders fans are going, who the heck is Norris.
I just off the phone with Butler. He decided to workout and go for a mountain run during draft day to pass the time. He was about to leave and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called him about being drafted. After reacting with wild emotion, Butler went on the run. “Nobody else will work out on Draft Day. That puts me one step ahead of everybody else.”
CB Brandon Hughes just went to the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round with the 148th pick. For Chargers fans to know who Hughes is, read the off-beat Q&A on him here. Here’s the off-beat Q&A with Lewis, while I’m at it.
Add S Al Afalava to list. He was picked by the Chicago Bears in sixth round with the 190th pick. Followed former OSU CB Coye Francis with the next pick by the Cleveland Browns.
The final OSU player who should be drafted was taken with WR Sammie Stroughter going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round. A few others should be signing free agent contracts.
By the way, seven draft picks is an OSU record. The old record was six from 1947 and 1967.
