Football draft prospects, recruiting Comments

The East beat the West 24-19 in the East-West Shrine Game over the weekend. The Oregon State football team had four players involved – CB Brandon Hughes, S Al Afalava, WR Sammie Stroughter and DE Victor Butler.

The only stats I’ve found were Stroughter for two catches for 31 yards. I did catch Butler making a few tackles. However, anyone out there who can find more stats please post.

Next up for Beavers representatives in postseason all-star games is the Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala. OL Andy Levitre and CB Keenan Lewis are involved. They are already out there working out for the scouts.

Read more about those two in Tuesday’s GT. Here’s a look at the four in the Shrine Game, incase you missed it last week.

There are other Beavers who have scouts interested, and they are led by DE Slade Norris. He’s not in an all-star game, to the disappointment of some scouts. He’s a possible pass-rush specialist/special teams player or an OLB candidate like Butler.

OL Tavita Thompson’s size interest some, but because he missed a season-worth of games and development due to he NCAA diet pill suspension, he’s most likely a free agent. OG Adam Speer my get a look as a free agent, while OG Jeremy Perry (knee) has fallen off the radar after being considered on the way to being a first-day draft pick early in his career.

Latest commintment

Michael Philipp, a four-star OL from Arroyo High in eastern Los Angeles area, verbally committed to the football team Monday, according to various recruiting services.

He turned down offers from seven other Pacific-10 Conference schools, with the exception of Southern California and Washington State.

Philipp is ranked the No. 1 prep guard in the nation by Rivals.com and the No. 4 guard by Scout.com. Rivals.com rates him as the No. 38 prospect this year in all positions. The Beavers, however, are interested in him as a tackle.

He is a 6-foot-4, 320-pounder who is considered a standout run blocker. Philipp is the 21st known commitment for the 2009 class, and the sixth on the offensive line.
