The Beavers take a timeout.

The Oregon State men’s basketball team put together a strong effort but still lost 61-57 in a Pacific-10 Conference game to Washington State at home on Thursday night.

Read Friday’s GT for the game story, and check out the below video for some postgame comments from players Rickey Claitt and Calvin Haynes.

Hayes took responsibility for the loss. He missed a late game-tying free-throw and wasn’t able to sink late shots. However, he led the team in scoring with 19 points.

“We’re still young,” Claitt said. “It’s still a growing process, and every game we are learning.”

Here are a few quick observations. C Roeland Schaftenaar continues to play better, and not only atop of the key. He got scrappy inside.

“When you think about it, this is Roeland’s first year to be the man at our point-center spot,” coach Craig Robinson said. “He’s starting to get into it. The way our offense is, he’s going to have a lot touches.”

F Daniel Deane bounced back from four bad games with a good effort. It wasn’t about glossy numbers, but rugged play.

G Lathen Wallace played himself in to a starting role after scoring 30 points in two games last weekend. He took F Omari Johnson’s place. He did well, scoring 13 points in 39 minutes.

The other starters were F Seth Tarver, Scharftenaar, Claitt and Deane. Haynes, the team’s leading scorer, still came off the bench. He and Johnson were the first in the game after tipoff.

Freshman F David Sturner (mono) is still away from the team. The Beavers have kept him away this week so he doesn’t infect teammates.
