Gill, hoops, recruiting Comments
It’s been promised, and now it’s upon us. The facelift to the exterior of Gill Coliseum has begun. Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis said the updated look of the arena would begin this fall and work started earlier this week. This is a view at the work being done from Parker Plaza.
You might wonder why there’s a shot of the basketball arena on the blog of the person who deals with OSU football and baseball for the GT. Well, news is starting to get out that there has been a shift in responsibility in the office, yet again.
After a year away from men’s hoops, I’m back on the beat. Baseball goes back to Brooks Hatch. The reason is simple. Due to changes in the news room, our main desk guy Aaron Yost is going to spend most of his time on the news copy desk. That means Brooks takes on a bigger role on the sports desk.
Hoops fall to me because of the heavy work load that sport demands, while baseball is not as demanding so Brooks can juggle it and desk work, hopefully. Our fingers are crossed for him.
It’s also a sad moment for me. Baseball is my favorite sport. I love watching it at all levels. The highlight to this is it gives me more time to be around for my son Hunter’s Little League team in the spring.
Early hoop preview
With new coach Craig Robinson in the rebuilding process that started while I was away from the team, I’m learning about this program just like the reader. So stay with me throughout the early part of the season while I’m still dealing with football.
When football winds down, look for the same type of stuff from the basketball team that came from football. I’ll have photos, video, news, funny stories (hopefully) and stories about who these people are and what makes them tick.
To start, he’s a link for some light reading. I’m sure if you are a hardcore fan you already stumbled on this. If not, it will get you in the mood with the first day a team practice can happen is Oct. 17. My alarm clock is ready to get me to those early-morning workouts.
Two-way recruit
S Kyrell Hudson committed to the football and baseball teams, according to Scout.com. Hudson is from Evergreen High in Vancouver, Wash. He’s a 6-foot, 185-pounder who also plays OF in baseball. This is the ninth recruit for the Beavers for the 2009 class, and first DB.
All of the recruits are high school players, indicating that the Beavers are looking for development players. Looking at the roster, the Beavers won’t need to rebuild with JC guys next season, especially if DE Simi Kuli enrolls after school starts or in the winter.
