Draft Day 1 Comments

The first player selected in the major league draft with ties to the Oregon State baseball team was SS Niko Vasquez in the third round with the 91st overall pick. He was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals.

He had academic issues, which may scare him away from the college experience. And third-round signing bonus money will be pretty good. If that were to happen, the Beavers lose a player with a good bat and arm with the ability to play SS or 3B.

Oregon may have lost its first recruit. Tigard High OF Ty Morrison, but listed as Christopher Morrison by the MLB site, was drafted in the fourth round with the 113th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays.

A second OSU recruit was drafted. RHP B.J. Hermsen out of Iowa was selected in the sixth round with the 186th overall pick. He’s coming back from a broken collarbone from football season. His velocity has been down, but it’s on the way back up.

It looks like Hermsen will take some time to think about his options, according to this article.
