PULLMAN, Wash. – Don’t expect a quarterback controversy, yet. Even though the Oregon State football team has won two straight with backup Lyle Moevao, Sean Canfield is still the starter.

Coach Mike Riley was asked after OSU’s 52-17 win over Washington State if Canfield (throwing shoulder strain) is done for the year, especially with the way Moevao is playing.

Riley said it’s too early to say Canfield won’t play again this year. He said Canfield is the guy but he has no hesitation to play Moevao.

“When Sean is ready to play, he’ll come back in,” Riley said. “I’m proud of Lyle. He’s doing (good) things because he never quit. I’m sure he was disappointed (being the backup), but he never quit. His mental toughness put him in position to play like he did tonight.”

The Beavers have created one of the more consistent programs in the Pac-10. They have a winning Pac-10 record in two straight years for the first time since 1966-69.

“It’s where we want to head,” Riley said. “We want that to be the norm. We want to be up in our conference every year and take a run at a championship here pretty soon and go from there.”

Sophomore OG Gregg Peat had a great day in his first start. He helped the running game gain 218 yards. However, his veteran mentor couldn’t help take some of the credit, in a friendly type of way.

“I don’t want to brag about myself,” said OT Roy Schuening, who is normally the right guard. “He has an experienced mentor. I have plenty of playing experience. I helped him out. He did a great job, and did what he was supposed to. He messed up one block, but did a great job for his first start.”

What a miserable day in Pullman. The regular rain made it the worst weather for any OSU game this season, but at least it didn’t snow. The weather kept the crowd away, and took away WSU’s home field advantage.

“That’s the kind of game we were looking for,” LB Joey LaRocque said. “I feel pretty good now. The whole team feels pretty good. It was fun out there. It was a little cold, but fun.”

That was addessed on my notes rail on the regular GT site. However, it was something muscular. He taken out of the game for precautionary reasons. Mike Riley said if the team needed him in the second half he would have gone in the game.

So who do you think is the better quarterback for the team at this point? And who do you think will get the job as starter next season?

What a great game by the OSU defense. The whole defensive team deserves the National Defensive Player of the Week Award. Lyle Moevao really looked comfortable this week at quarterback, and it appeared as though he was really having fun. What great smiles he had after he overthrew several open receivers on long passes. That will be the next thing to improve — timing with his receivers. At this point, I think he would be the better choice to go against the Ducks. Let Canfield heal all the way for the bowl game. Canfield will be rusty if he comes back against the Ducks.

Great win. Defense was awesome once again. What depth for the Beavs. On top of all that, they garaunteed themselves to have more wins the the Basketball team this year. How does any D1 program lose to Alaska f%#@ing Fairbanks. Who will embarass the Beavs next LBCC. Jay John must have pictures on someone.

Beaverpaul,

I agree that Moevao would be the better choice against the Ducks after seeing his performance yesterday against WSU. I hope Riley sees it that way. Why mess with a good thing? Let Canfield heal. Maybe all the way till next year (depending on how Lyle does against the Ducks). Then let them duke it out in training next season, to see who comes out as starter. Nice to have 2 good choices.

I was quite pleased to see the officials checking the replays and not pulling the usual garbage. It was monitored closely. I do appreciate it as I am sure all the Beavers and Pac-10 do.

It was nice to see Catchings following his last name in this game! I think he’s going to be a good one! Can’t say enough about the play calling to help out Moevao and of course Yev and Rodgers are solid. I think we need to use some more of Polk vs. the ducks?????

Lyle Moevao is the best QB at the moment. Even going into the Civil War, he’ll be better. Maybe by the bowl game, Sean Canfield can get his feel of the game back.

As for next year, we’ll see how the spring goes. I can’t make a good guess, yet.

I think Sean is still the QB of the next 2 years. However, I would like to see someone else back him up with Lyle getting on the field in other ways in addition to backing up QB. He’s a football player, likes to hit and has the build for it, find some ways to play him.
